MMORPG - Hobby or Addiction?

When someone dies in a videogame, it’s frustrating...but not the end of the world.

But when someone dies in real life because of a videogame, it’s quite shocking. Whenever this happens, it’s usually due to a MMORPG.

MMORPG’s are one of the most popular gaming genres in the world. With the likes of World of Warcraft and Runescape, it lures more people into their fantasy online world every day.

There are many cases where people have lost their social life in these games, neglecting friends and family.

I was once addicted to an MMORPG - Runescape. The thing that lured me in was its promise of freedome, and I wanted to play these types of games, but didn’t want to spend the large amounts of money on a subscription.

I played Runescape for a year or so, but after playing it for this time, I saw that the game had so much more to offer when you have a paid subscription.

After a night of begging my parents to pay for it, I got it. Unfortunately my social life went downhill, besides my one other friend who played Runescape. I was pushing friends and family away to play Runescape.

Three months later, I quit.

People have lost friends and family to these games, but when they lose their lives to it, it’s a different story entirely.

In one case in America, a single mother (Rebecca Colleen Christie) who had a young child loved to play World of Warcraft. Unfortunately she neglected to look after her child so she could play.

Her child, Brandi Wulf, ended up eating cat litter out of starvation. She only weighed 23lbs. The child lost her life because of a WoW addiction and the mother is now serving 25 years in jail.

My thoughts on why they’re so addictive, is because they’re always offering you more loot. (items, weapons, armor etc.). It never seems to ever end.

It taunts people.

I also think that it’s a way for people, (that don’t have many friends or are insecure) to be someone that they are not - An avatar they can hide behind.
Also, a part of the addictiveness is your ability to train up skills, and then show them off to the world. You want to feel self-accomplishment in the game, and in real life.

Of course, a lot of the things I have mentioned are in normal RPG’s like Skyrim as well, but the difference between MMORPG’s, and games like Skyrim is that MMORPG’s add content very quickly in patches.

They do this because they need to keep your subscription. When it comes to Skyrim though, Bethesda already has your money, so there’s no pressure of adding content every week or so.
I have had personal experience with MMORPG’s, but more specifically with Runescape. I don’t want to put all of you off MMORPG’s but I do think that you need to be aware of the potential risks (to your health and social life).

Never put off friends and family for a videogame, and don’t let MMORPG’s ruin your life.

  1. hi there Athras. I was playing Gaia and noticed MMO talk there. Being a middle aged mom of daughters, I havent had experience with this "little other world" and so I prayed and then googled it. (I wanted to choose the best site to explain it to me in a neutral and experienced way. Thank you for doing just that! I don't know how old you are, but I hope your mom or dad (or both!) tell you every day that they are proud of you. You are very eloquent and have been gifted with a way of explaining things that doesn't talk down to the person you are writing to. Thank you very much for that. Keep up the good work friend! B.
