The Importance of Music in Games

Everyone has their favorite when it comes to music in games.

Some people, (like yours truly)...have many. If you've ever played a game with a good soundtrack, you know what I'm talking about.

It's that one track that sticks with you, that gets engraved in your mind and soul. That melody that you start humming for no reason. That one song that you can still sing along to even if you haven't heard it for years.

Binding of Isaac, Skyrim, Legend of Zelda, Game Music, Games, Video Games, Future Pixel, Article, Gaming ArticleMusic makes a game.

It completes their spirit, sets the mood. Skyrim's dungeons would be boring, repetetive hack-n'-slashes without their haunting, atmospheric tunes.

The Binding of Isaac could have been one of the most depressing games of this generation without energetic rock blasting behind its cartoonishly gorey visuals.

Want to go back further? The Legend of Zelda could have been just another RPG without its instantly recognizable melodies accompanying you every step of the way.

Binding of Isaac, Skyrim, Legend of Zelda, Game Music, Games, Video Games, Future Pixel, Article, Gaming ArticleWhat I think I'm trying to say here is that music is one of the most underappreciated, yet most vital, pieces of making a good game. It's what makes your heart race when facing a boss the size of a city block, what gives you that sense of pride and accomplishment when you find great loot tucked away in a puzzle room (I'm looking at you, Zelda). It's what will stay with you the longest after you stop playing, more memorable than enemies, perks, landscape, and weapons.

I was browsing through my music library the other day, and I realized that of the hundreds of tracks I own, the ones I love to listen to the most are from game soundtracks. Bastion, the Binding of Isaac, Saints Row: The Third, Portal, and Skyrim all make appearances on my Top 25 Most Played.

So this is a shoutout to all the composers, DJs, and musicians out there who make the tunes we love. Darren Korb, Jeremy Soule, Malcolm Kirby Jr., Koji Kondo, Malukah and all the others - this is for you. Keep making our ears happy. That is all.
