Star Wars: The Old Republic, how to get the game

As many people are eager to play the game, they may have found that SWTOR is not yet available in stores in all regions yet.

One of those regions is South Africa, and yet I'm playing and blogging about it.

Here's how you too can play SWTOR if it isn't yet available in stores in your region.

The first step to playing SWTOR:

1.) Sign up on the official site, head over here:

Sign up requirements are a valid email address,a display name, date of birth, language and country.Although SWTOR isn't available in South Africa in stores yet, choosing South Africa as your country of origin will not in any way effect the sign up process.

Once you have created your account, there are 4 more steps to take before you can begin playing:

2.) Choose and answer 5 security questions. The process is quite easy.

Choose a question from a drop down menu and provide an answer.

These questions will be used to verify your login both on the site and on the game launcher, so be sure to choose the questions you'll remember the answers to.

3.) You will then need to provide personal contact details - such as your name and address. Take note of the fields that are required and be sure to full them in as you will not be allowed to play without them.Fields that are required are marked with a yellow *.

4.) Redeem your product code.As with most MMO's,each copy of SWTOR has a unique code in the box that you use on sign up.For regions where the game is not yet commercially available, this isn't the end of the world. There are online retail stores where you can buy the product key.I recommend mmogamersa,an online store based in Durban, go here for the game key:

When you buy online like this you don't get the game box, simply a CD key. Some people may be a bit wary of this type of purchase. In fact I had some problems during sign up,but mmogamer has some excellent customer service. All I had to do was drop them an email and they helped me right away.

5.) Subscribe to the game.As with most MMOs with a subscription,SWTOR requires subscription details before you are allowed to play.Your subscription can be in the form of credit card details,or the key code of a game time card if you prefer.Game time cards can be found at mmogamersa as well, here:

For those who require extra security

There is a fifth and optional step, setting up a security key.You can either buy a device or download a program for free to your cellphone that provides this key.Security keys are basically random number codes generated everytime you want to log in,the device or your phone provides you with the current log in key.

Time to download and play:

After you have completed these steps, all that's left is to download the client at the link provided on your account page, wait for a few updates, and launch.

The game client currently stands at just short of 20GB,this may seem like a monster download, but things are made easier by the fact that you can aquire the entire game client file from a friend who already has it,and simply log in with your own details.

Playing the game:

There are currently only 2 server regions available,America or Europe.

There are several game servers for each region, each shows the server load.Personally I play on the European servers,as in all previous MMO's this has been my server region choice.(I play on the Dxun Battle Circle server).

Please note:
Star Wars: The Old Republic is an online game that requires constant internet connection during play.Star Wars: The Old Republic requires a monthly subscription fee.
