Gaming in 2011 and the Year Ahead

Well everyone.....2012 is finally here, and now that my head has stopped spinning from New Years Eve, I can focus again.

It was nice to have a bit of a break from everything (my level 70 character in Skyrim would certainly agree), but now it's time to reflect on the past year and start looking at all the exciting things to come in the year ahead.

2011 was a fantastic year for gaming and had some spectacular releases to keep us busy. Many in the Gaming Industry have aptly dubbed it "The year of the 3's". The reason for this of course is due to the amount of games that had the number 3 in the title. (Gears of War 3, Super Mario 3D Land, Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, Uncharted 3, Battlefield 3, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, and Saint's Row 3 being the most popular)

Other upcoming releases seem set to continue this trend way into 2012, with games like Diablo3, Farcry 3, Mass Effect 3, Dragon Age 3, Ninja Gaiden 3, and Max Payne 3 on the way.

Aside from all the above, 2011 was filled with other exceptional releases that will stand the test of time as some of the finest offerings to the industry.

Dead Island showed us that a Zombie Game doesn't have to be claustrophobic, linear or dark to be terrifying, and that sometimes people don't just leave bullets and guns lying around.

Batman Arkham City finally made us feel like we truly were the Dark Knight, giving us an open world, plenty of villains and Batman's entire arsenal of gadgets to take them out.

Dark Souls proved that games don't have to be easy to be good, making us question our own skills at playing games, with a difficulty level so high that it bordered on pure insanity.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim blew everyone away with the size and scope of it's dynamic world, giving us hundreds of hours of potential gameplay and showing us just how much content can be stored on one disk.150+ hours in and I still don't feel like it's going to end anytime soon.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution showed us just how good a remake/prequel could actually be with a fantastic approach to story-telling and RPG mechanics in a First Person shooter.

Of course, on the flip side we saw that remakes can be terrible as well. Duke Nukem Forever was finally released and ended up being one of the most annoying games of the year.

This year looks to bring back some of our most loved gaming characters with the rebirth of the Hitman series, and Tomb Raider, while the Syndicate series and Xcom will be making a comeback in the form of First Person Shooters . All these games look as if they'll be massive success and highly enjoyable, but only time will tell. We can only hope they don't follow in Duke's footsteps.

New games like Kingdoms of Amalur and Bioshock Infinite will attempt to redefine their respective genres and push the envelope, while sequels to existing games like the upcoming Halo 4, Borderlands 2, GTA5 and Farcry 3 will build significantly on their existing formulas and introduce some interesting new features.

Plenty of rumors are starting to surface on what we might see this year (release or announcement), hinting at a possible Dead Space First Person Shooter, a new Xbox console and maybe even a new Sony Console.

Of course, we'll keep you updated on the latest news on all of these and more as the year progresses with new Videos, Articles, News and Reviews.

All in all, 2012 is set to be as exciting and ground-breaking as last year and we'll be here to share it with you every step of the way.
