Unintentional Irony after Christmas Dinner

This is what I looked like after a positively MASSIVE Christmas dinner comprised of Gammon, Chicken, Lamb, Potatoes, Squash and other assorted vegetables. After my second plate of food I suddenly realized that my Angry Birds T-shirt was ironically the most fitting and highly symbolic piece of clothing I could have possibly worn.........This Little Piggy went Boom?.......almost!!!!

Gaming and our Loved Ones

Being a Gamer is something that’s not always understood by our loved ones, relatives or significant others. There are even times where our passion for games is not even tolerated within our own households. (Anyone in this position has my deepest sympathies by the way)

There have been many times in my life where I have encountered this, particularly when I was growing up, both with family and with girlfriends.

Of course, at times it’s certainly justifiable.

A good example of this was my mother – while all I wanted to do when I got home from school was play games on my PC, she was insistent that I focus on other activities that had more importance at the time. (Schoolwork, Eating and sleeping being the most important.)

I was certainly not banned from playing games at all, but necessity dictated that I regulate the amount of time I played to focus on other things. These lessons that I learnt when I was younger still benefit me today and also prevent me from becoming a hermit.

Incidentally, my mother bought my nephew an Xbox for his birthday earlier this year and has become a big fan of the Bowling in Kinect Sports. She’ll never admit it, but technically that makes her a gamer too.

Ruri-Buri, one of the writers for Future Pixel is part of an entire family of gamers, which is very rare, but must make for a very interesting household. According to her, the biggest problem a family full of gamers has are arguments over who gets to play which console at any given time. It also makes for evenings quiet of anything other than random gaming exclamations.

The biggest problem is when our loved ones have no understanding of why we play games at all, and when there is no desire to understand……….it can make being a gamer significantly harder.

I have had many girlfriends whose understanding of my passion for games was non-existent, and in the end this caused problems.

Let’s put it this way - when you pass you significant other a controller and try to involve them, their response is actually very revealing in my opinion. Often you may get a negative response, or sometimes even a blatant refusal to even try. (Obviously trying to get them to play Dead Island or Call of Duty may be a stretch at first.)

I feel this is sometimes indicative of another more serious problem though - A lack of desire to share the passions, hobbies and interests of your better half.

While this is not always a bad thing (everyone has their own interests after all), sharing your interests with the person you love can bring you closer as long as it’s not forced.

However, if you push her away and do not let her get involved…’s your own fault and you deserve what you get.

I am pleased to say that this has not been an issue for me in quite some time.

My Girlfriend plays games as much as I do, and I’m actually proud to admit that she beats me in the majority of games we play against each other.

She can hold her own in Call of Duty, and usually surpasses any character I create in an RPG due to her vast experience in World of Warcraft.

We often sit for hours and talk about the games we play, and much of our time is spent with me playing Xbox, and she playing on her laptop in the same room. (Often sharing insights and conversation of the games we’re playing.......and the occasional outbursts of "DIE,DIE,DIE!!!!")

Occasionally we both play Gears of War, Gunstringer or Kinect Sports to keep things interesting, and often take turns playing Angry Birds to see if we can beat each others scores.

This isn’t all we do of course, and we still go out for dinner with each other and with friends. Occasionally we still go clubbing and attend parties.

As with all things…..Balance is very important.

Thanks to all of this I now have a greater understanding of the importance of sharing activities with the one you love.

Our mutual interest in gaming has truly strengthened our relationship and is a great source of happiness for us as a couple.....bringing us closer together.

Star Wars : The Old Republic Launches

The Star Wars Movies have always been very popular within the video gaming industry.

Since the original release of the movies, there have been plenty of games released, although not all of them were as spectacular as they were made out to be.

The latest game to be added to this already massive list is Star Wars : The Old Republic which brings the Star Wars Universe to the Massively Multiplayer Online genre.

Developed by Bioware (in conjuction with LucasArts) looks like it may actually be something quite special.

Set approximately 3000 years after the movies, you're able to join one of two opposing factions - The Galactic Republic and The Sith Empire.

Even though the game follows the usual MMO formula, there are a few interesting new additions and features worth mentioning.

One of the most interesting features of the game (which sets it apart from it's competitors) is that the cut-scenes and NPC interactions are fully voiced which is a first for the genre. Even the most mundane of quests feature extensive character dialogue and considering the fact that each class has it's own unique quests, the amount of voice acting that must've been done for this game is insane.

Also interesting to note is that due to the emphasis on choice provided within the game, you are able to more actively determine the outcome of quests, and even kill the Quest-giver if you see fit.

Questing alone is also more interesting as well, as you are able to get a number of different NPC companions who will fight with you. (Incidentally, they also do all your crafting for you)

Eventually each class gets to a point where they have their own starship, which allows travel between worlds such as Hoth or Tatooine.

And of course, no MMORPG would be complete without a Player vs Player element and Old Republic does not appear to dissapoint.

Aptly titled "Warzones" (the equivalent of Battlegrounds), they include some interesting variations to the gameplay. One of these is a Warzone called "Huttball" which puts you in a futuristic ball sport with Acid Pools, Flame Pits and lightsabers to mix things up a bit.

Time will tell whether this game lives up to all the expectations that players had since its original announcement 3 years ago, but thus far it looks to be quite solid.

Review of Assassins Creed Revelations

Like many other gamers, my experience with Assassins Creed started with the first game, where you play as Altair Ibn-la’ahad.

What made me get caught up in this franchise was that you were free to explore the cities as u progressed in the game. You had the freedom to roam the rooftops stalking your prey, waiting for the right moment to strike from the sky.

It was a nice change to be able to do something free, unlike most games that had mostly restricted you to a purely A To B style of gameplay.

In the game world of Assassins and Templars, they both fight for peace in the world....they just have different means to reach their objectives.

Though it may be the same goal, the Templars work with brute force, trying to control people's wills, insteed of embracing the fact that free will is the right way to achieve world peace.

So Anyway, the first Assasin’s Creed game that Ubisoft made confined you to one type of mission mostly, but the game also made me curious about the progressing story.......and what would happen next.

Alta├»r is an ancestor of Desmond Miles (the game franchise’s present day Protagonist), who also has another ancestor who is the main character in Assassins creed 2, Brotherhood and Revelations.

For those who played Assasin’s Creed 2 and Brotherhood, we know him as Ezio Auditore - "The Mentor" and Son of Giovanni Auditore.

Assassins creed 2 was all about Ezio’s younger years as he starts off as an assassin (around the age of 17), where he meets up with a young inventor named Leonardo Da Vinci.

Later in the francise (Assasin’s Creed: Brotherhood) you play as Ezio in his middle ages, at that age he gets the title "Mentor" which only the strongest of assassins get.

So now for the part of the story that we all been waiting for....

Assassin’s Creed: Revelations starts when Ezio is in his older years.

He’s quite old now, but still very agile for his age. I guess it must be from all those years of being an Assassin.

The thing I like the most about the new game is that they have still kept everything good from Assassins Creed 2 and Brotherhood, as well as some new changes in the game as well.

here are of course new weapons and new armor too.

During the course of the game you will learn the true name of subject 16, who he is and what happened to him.

Not only will you question what you know from the previous games, but you will also find out what happens to Ezio by the end.

Assassins Creed is a fantastic experience, the graphics are improved greatly, and the camera angles adjust and flow well with you as you move.

The gameplay is still much the same with the parkour style of gameplay where u can climb every inch of every building and now they’ve added an interesting new dynamic to the game....The Zipline.

When an assassin gets tired of running..... he takes for the sky's.

It’s an all new way of getting from one point to another, with the added benefit of taking out your prey from the zipline. It truly is a whole new experience for the game.

The core gameplay is mostly the same as the first Assassins Creed though.

The attention to detail in the game is well thought out, and there’s a lot to explore!! I’ve still hardly touched on the exploring and collecting so I still have quite a few hours to investigate and play. :) hehe.

And by the way, I won’t speculate too much on whether they’re going to make another game soon......but the game does leave you hanging in the end. If u ask me, the francise is definitely not over yet.

Time to get back to the collecting and exploring. wish me luck!!!.....

Command and Conquer Tiberium Alliances - Free to Play MMORTS

EA's latest in the Command and Conquer series looks to change the dynamic of RTS games by making it Free to Play.

While the graphics, visual style and map size looks to be dumbed down significantly, there is a good reason for this being the case.

Firstly, this new Command and Conquer will be browser based and therefore more accessible than the previous games.
Structured as a Massively Multiplayer Online Strategy game, it will be compatible with mobile devices and will also be cross-platform.

EA promises "a completely interactive and dynamic gameplay experience," with in-game social and news feeds updated in real time.

Players will be pitted against each other, as well as computer-controlled mutants.

This is also the second Command and Conquer game announced this week. The first being Command and Conquer Generals 2 for PC.

Feel free to sign up for the Command and Conquer Tiberium Alliance Beta on the official site (or view the trailer) -

Call of Duty : Modern Warfare 3 makes over $1 Billion dollars

As we all know, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 was bound to sell extremely well, but the latest news on exactly how staggering!!!

Today an announcement from Activision showed that Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 has made $1 Billion in the first sixteen days of release.

James Cameron's movie Avatar reached the $1 billion mark after seventeen days which means that Call of Duty beat that number by one day.

The Number of players currently part of the Call of Duty Community has been revealed by Activision as being over 30 million people which (to give you an idea) exceeds the populations of  New York, London, Tokyo, Paris and Madrid combined!!!

That's a lot of people.......and a lot of Sales.

Serious Sam 3 shows how to fight Piracy......Send an Invincible Scorpion!!

There are many ways that Developers try to fight Piracy, but few are as interesting as this......

Serious Sam 3 has been released on Steam for download, and if you've ever played the previous games then you know what to expect........constant hordes of enemies that never seem to end.

Of course, if you pirate the game, cracking the DRM to play without'll face something a little bit more...unexpected (and equally hilarious).

An incredibly fast...........INVINCIBLE SCORPION!!!!!

Take a look at the clip below.

Nintendo 3DS Firmware Update goes Live - First Impressions

The latest Nintendo 3DS firmware update went Live today, providing an interesting new feature to the handheld gaming console.

You are now able to record up to 10 minutes of 3D video on the device and I have to say.......the 3D on the Video Recording is surreal and very well implemented.

The Video recorder allows you to take Photographs at intervals, and has the ability to record Stop Capture animation.

A new StreetPass Quest has been added to the StreetPass Mii Plaza, but can only be accessed once you have received all the hats in the original StreetPass Quest. New panels are now available in Puzzle Swap as well.

You are also now able to transfer data between 3DS consoles (photo's and video's mostly I'm guessing)

The Nintendo eShop will also be receiving a much needed upgrade. Nintendo 3DS owners will soon have the option to download demos of selected 3DS games which will allow them to try the games out before making a purchase.

Your downloads will also now continue when the console is in sleep mode, which is a nice surprise for when you come back to it.

Well done Nintendo!!!! You've added some nice additions which will keep me busy for a while, and when those Demos come out I'll definitely be downloading them.

Dark Souls First Impressions.......Staring Death in the Face!!!

There are Two RPG's that are taking up almost all of my free time lately.

The Former, as I'm sure you can guess is The Elder Scrolls V : Skyrim....which is highly time consuming and  incredibly immersive to say the least. It's also a very rewarding game when it comes to quests and exploration.

The Second's just put it this way........the latter has very little in common with the former.

Dark Souls is also an RPG, and has level progression, magic and combat like any RPG does........however this is where the similarity ends.

Being the spiritual successor to Demon souls (A PS3 exclusive title), it maintains the unforgiving difficulty it's predecessor was famous for and pushes it to new heights.

Many of you may be wondering why I have not written a review on Dark Souls already, considering I did purchase the game when it was released.

The truth of it is this....this game is so unbelievably, crazily, ridiculously difficult that it has seriously stood in the way of me doing a full review. (hence the "first impressions" in the title of this post)

If you look at sites like IGN, Gamespot, Eurogamer or Kotaku........they have a very large compliment of staff and reviewers. In these situations, the amount of games per reviewer is naturally minimized and allows for a more comprehensive and detailed synopsis of each game.

And,......... due to the fact that it's the season to be Jolly for many gamers, there's naturally a lot of games to cover.

Add to this, the most difficult game to come out since Battle Toads on the orignal NES, and a reviewers life is no longer easy at all.

In Future Pixel's case, being a site that is still in it's beginning phase, with approximately 7 writers / contributers's quite a handful to say the least.

Dark Souls is masterfully presented, with it's visceral and gritty design and satisfying character animations with regards to's certainly an RPG to please for those who are persistent.

I don't give up in games as a general rule, so I will certainly continue to push through the insanely overpowered enemies and unforgiving levels.

Admittedly, I'm not the best at this game.....but I very much doubt anyone is!!!

Expect a full review at a later stage (maybe when I stop dying so much).

Play it......and you'll understand.

Or check out the aptly titled official game website -

Ratchet and Clank: All 4 One - and all for multiplayer

Ratchet and Clank:All 4 One is the tenth R&C game released by Insomniac Games and Sony.
Unlike the previous installments, All 4 One was created as a multiplayer title mainly instead of
a single-player,third-person game with a multiplayer mode.

All 4 One is a 4 person multiplayer, allowing players to try their hand at being Ratchet,Clank,
Captain Qwark or Dr.Nefarious. The game plays online or offline and allows extra players to
drop in and out of play. You can also play the game singleplayer, an AI partner appearing to help
you at at times.

The gameplay is the same as in previous games of the installment, with hack-n-slash
components provided by your trusty wrench, and third-person shooting with the ever-interesting
arsenal of guns provided.

The mutiplayer for the most part is quite smooth, however it takes place on a single screen
instead of split, which brings in certain frustrations if a member of your team falls behind.
Theres also the issue of your swingshot latching onto fellow players instead of the target,
which while initially hilarious can become annoying.

Game Map:

The game map lives up to those experienced in the earlier games. It's basically a linear path
that you have to take, but the active and interesting backgrounds allow for a feeling of openness.

The map has been slightly enlarged to compensate for 4 players at once, instead of the usual 1,
which makes the path less obvious at points if you're playing a single player game and
therefore a little bit frustrating when you find yourself in a dead end that you thought may
be an alternate route.

The storyline of All 4 One is interesting and engaging, if somewhat predictable. Nefarious is
attempting to take revenge on Ratchet,Clank and Qwark and his plans go slightly awry,
forcing him to take sides with the heroes to survive.

All 4 One is a great addition to the Ratchet and Clank series.

The only real problem I could see, aside from some elements that caused frustrations, was that there is apparently no Insomniac easter egg I greatly enjoyed in the previous titles.
