Warhammer 40000 Space Marine - Loads of Orks......Yes, It's spelled with a 'k'

I have never played a Warhammer game,so I was slightly worried that Warhammer 40000:Space Marine
would lose its charm for me simply because I understood nothing.Thankfully, the Warhammer
universe was presented in a way that was easy to understand to a newbie, although I assume
it all meant more to veterans.

The Setting:
The game is set on the planet Graia, which is essentially one big military industrial compound.......
and it shows. The planet is portrayed mostly in shades of brown and grey with smoky skies.

This atmosphere isn't entirely due to the planets industrial nature though.
When you arrive on the planet it is also under siege by Orks (yes, spelled with a 'k').This
obviously affects map layout a bit, and you find yourself running around broken buildings,
attempting to get to your location in one piece whilst under enemy fire.

Gameplay:
Space Marine features a mixture of third person shooting and hack-and-slash combat which
I found quite fun.The shooter aspect features an ammo limit, something I respect in singleplayer,
unlimited ammo feels like a god-mode to me,decreasing game difficulty and overall enjoyability.

My favourite combat style was the hack-and-slash though. I especially enjoyed the irony of
making planet-fall via a jet-pack and then being able to whip out a weapon as simple as a knife
to defeat the Ork hordes .Albeit a knife that is best described as the love child of a
machette and a carving knife. Also, you later get a much larger knife with a chainsaw component,
and I do love me a chainsaw in combat.

Story:
The storyline isn't the most complicated ever seen in a game.

Planet in trouble?Send in the Big Guns.

There are a few interesting twists though, and it was very well told, with certain aspects
of the 40k universe well explained for us who are late comers to it, such as the Ork Hierarchy.

All in all a well put together game, although the cutscenes occasionally made it feel a bit
disjointed, and I really would like to know what the odd dots on the protagonists
forehead actually are...
