10 interesting facts about MMORPG's you may not know


Millions all over the world are playing an MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Role Playing Games) as we speak.

Their level of popularity is immense to say the least, and there are more examples of this genre out there than you might realize.

More well known examples over the last few years are World of Warcraft, Guild Wars, Warhammer Online and Star Wars: The Old Republic.

Here are 10 things you may not know about this genre.



Longest Running Guild in Online gaming
Originally established in 1996, "The Syndicate" is the longest running established Online Guild. They have been running for over 14 years, and have a presence in several different games including World of Warcraft and Ultima Online. They also Beta Test for several MMO developers.



First Fully Voice-acted MMORPG
Star Wars: The Old Republic will mark the first time that an MMORPG has full voice acting for non-player characters. Due for release this December, Bioware recorded hundreds of thousands of lines of dialogue.


Longest Running Science Fiction MMORPG
Anarchy Online holds this title, and has been around since 2001 - A period of 9 years.


Most Expensive Virtual Property in an MMORPG
Certain MMORPG's (particularly those with a more social focus) provide in-game property. The most expensive purchase of in-game property was within the game "Planet Calypso". In January 2010, Erik Novak purchased the Crystal Palace Space Station for $330,000 dollars. The purchase was made at a public auction.


Most Popular Console MMORPG
Although MMORPG's are very rarely available on console, the most popular Console MMORPG is Playstation Home for the PS3. Accessible via the Playstation Network, it has a record-breaking 14 million user accounts. 


Fastest selling Expanson pack for an MMORPG
The fastest selling Expansion pack for an MMORPG goes to World of Warcaft for their "Wrath of the Lich King" expansion pack. It sold 2.8 million copies in its first 24 hours of release.


Best Selling Virtual Item in an MMORPG
The Celestial Steed Mount in World of Warcraft is the best selling virtual item ever sold in an MMORPG. 140, 000 queued to purchase it on its initial release and provides no real benefits in the game other than being a status symbol.




First player to "Complete" World of Warcraft
World of Warcraft is open ended and cannot actually be completed in the usual sense, however "Little Gray" from Taiwan did manage to complete all the achievements available in the game at the time. He managed to achieve 986 of 986 achievement points that were available.  



First  Player to reach Levelm 80 in World of Waraft
With the release of Wrath of the Lich King, the player level was raised to 80 in World of Warcraft. The First player to reach this level was a gamer know only as "Nyhm" who managed to reach Level 80 within 27 hours of release.



Most Prolific MMORPG Publisher
With over 24 MMORPG's published since 1998, NCsoft has created more MMORPG's than any other Video Game publisher.

  2. Technically it is actually considered a "Social" MMORPG. (According to the Guiness World Book of Records - Gamers Edition)

    While not as conventional as the MMORPG's we know and love, it still has some features that are similar.
